SWEDISH PIANO MAKERS AND FACTORIES

Version 21 (September 2005)
Copyright Conny Carlsson and Eva Helenius-Öberg 1977

This list was begun in 1977 within the scope of the, at that time, recently started research project The Piano in Sweden, initiated by Conny Carlsson and Eva Helenius-Öberg. 25 years ago, there were still piano factories left in Sweden, and consequently also technicians who had learnt and worked in them. Being the grand old man of Swedish piano technicians and tuners, Conny Carlsson (1921-2002) knew the piano world from the inside. Eva Helenius is a musicologist concentrating on Swedish keyboard instrument production, especially clavichords and hammer instruments. Together, they founded the research project The Piano in Sweden, aimed at investigating, describing, preserving and publishing knowledge on Swedish keyboard instrument culture. Since 1998, the Society of Klaverens Hus has been behind this work. The society resides in Söderhamn, where a centre of Swedish keyboard instrument art is being built up. The ambition is to create an instrument collection that mirrors Swedish piano and reed organ production through the ages.

Additions to the list are have been given by
*Lars-Åke and Håkan Hjort, Gothenburg
*HansErik Svensson, Stockholm
*Members of the Swedish Association of Piano Tuners and Technicians
*Teachers and pupils at the piano technicians school in Leksand, University of Dalecarlia
*Private persons who own instruments

The list gives piano builders and factories (masters and factory owners, not workers among employees of the factories) that are known today. In brackets are given first the years of life, if known, and thereafter the period of work. If there is only one statement of time, it refers to the work.

Swedish alphabetisation has been used in this list, with the letters Å, Ä, Ö placed at the end after Z.

The list is constantly being worked on and thus continuously revised. A dialogue is welcomed between ourselves and users – piano tuners and technicians, museums (central, regional and local), musicians, private persons and others.
