The Klaverens Hus collections

The Klaverens Hus collections are made up of a variety of artefacts, plus text, picture and sound archives and a reference library.

The artefact collection comprises instruments, tools, machines, materials etc. from our piano and organ factories. The accessions book of instruments and tools numbers over 220 items (September 2005). Still to be added to these is Conny Carlsson’s large collection of tools, machines, templates (for example for making grand piano cases), wooden models for cast iron frames, a piano cradle, lacquer and polish, semi-manufactured articles, name signs, a planing bench, a polish bench, a veneer press, glue pans, actions, action models etc., numbering almost 2,000 items.

The text archiveconsists of catalogues and price lists - originals and copies - from Swedish and non-Swedish manufacturers of pianos, harmoniums, self-playing instruments and piano actions. Currently being built up is a collection of copies of archive documents, as well as a register of such records from Swedish piano and reed organ factories as have been found.

The picture archive contains original full-scale drawings of pianos and the occasional grand piano, as well as photos (both originals and copies) of factory buildings and interiors, showing the different manufacturing processes. Three films from the Malmsjö and Östlind & Almquist factories dating from 1927 and 1936 respectively are believed to be unique. There are also videos of the piano maker Uno Bergling (1908-1992) in Herrljunga, and of various pianists on the concert platform.

The sound archive contains about 25 interviews from 1977- c. 1990. Interviewees are piano manufacturers, piano factory workers, technicians, tuners and sales representatives. A collection of recordings featuring Swedish pianists, harpsichordists and clavichordists is currently being built up.

The reference library will eventually be able to offer literature on instruments, different factories and workshops, manufacturers, makers and workers, the manufacturing process, regulation, scaling, tuning and temperament. Associated areas also covered will include industrial and technological history, museum catalogues of instruments, and literature on the musical and social use of keyboard instruments through the ages, including iconographical references. The library also has a regional and local history department.

More detailed descriptions of the collections will be added successively to this document.
